What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is the day after American Thanksgiving, and is commonly seen as the kick-off to Christmas shopping and the holiday season. The first recorded use of the term “Black Friday” referred to the collapse of the U.S. gold market on Friday, September 24, 1869. In the 1960’s, retailers began to use the term “Black Friday” to describe the day on which retailers went from operating “in the red” (at a loss) to operating “in the black” (at a profit). Today, the term “Black Friday” refers to the Friday after Thanksgiving, when many people begin their holiday shopping and many retailers offer holiday sales on their goods.
